How to Get a Replacement Retainer

Your dental retainer cracked, broke, or got misplaced. We get it, these things happen. Pets chew them. They get stepped on. Sometimes, you just forget where you put the thing. If you lost your retainer, you don’t want to put off getting a replacement retainer any longer than you have to. Your teeth can quickly start to shift without a retainer being worn regularly. If your retainer is cracked or broken, it is still best to continue to try to wear it if possible while ordering a new retainer and waiting for it to arrive.

You can get your replacement retainer in one of two ways:

  1. Dentist or Orthodontist

The traditional way to replace a retainer is to go to your dentist or orthodontist. They will likely already have your impression and can make you a replacement retainer based on that. While this may seem like the more convenient option, the price of replacing a retainer through a dentist fluctuates greatly depending on location and even from dentist to dentist. This cost can be anywhere from $200 to $600 per retainer, making replacing your retainer a potentially expensive prospect.

2. Order Online

One way to remove the overhead costs from a replacement retainer is to go direct to the source by making your own impression and ordering a retainer from the same dental labs that dentists and orthodontists order from. You can Just order a retainer online at SportingSmiles, take your impression at home, and mail it directly into a dental lab to be created. This cuts out the middle man while still getting the same high-quality product. Online retainers are just as good if not better than than going to the dentist. Online retainers are made from a company that specializes only in making dental retainers.

Not all broken retainers necessarily need to be replaced. If you have the Hawley model wire retainers, a dental lab might be able to repair them instead of replacing the retainer. This can be more cost-effective, so it may well be worth checking before getting it replaced. Unfortunately, clear Essix-style retainers can’t be repaired when they are cracked.

Thankfully, using our service, Essix retainers are easy and cheap to replace. SportingSmiles offers the ability to reorder at a discounted price.

  1. Hi there, I had braces a few years ago and wore my retainers very carefully for the first two years after getting them removed however I haven’t worn them in a few months and unfortunately I think my teeth have moved as they nkw cause discomfort to wear. I was just curious about how much it would cost to get a new set of clear night time retainers made and with the current situation of covid-19 you are offering to deliver an impression kit and if I’m able to send you my impressions to have a retainer made.

Many thanks hope to hear from you soon.

  2. Hi,

My daughter was getting orthodontic from the dentist. She was using Invisible for quite some time. Now she has completed the Invisible duration. The dentist said she has to order the retainers for the upper and lower side. Is it possible to order it directly from you using the kit? How much will be the cost for the kit and retainer? Dentist mentioned that their retainers quality is great and they will last until recommended use for 4 years before she don’t need further.

  3. Hi- I lost my active retainer and need to get a replacement. I have the mold already, do you offer an option to just send in mold I already have?

  4. Are these the clear and thin retainers? Also I have lingual retainers on the bottom, is the price the same for just the upper?

  5. Hi I am hoping you can help me. My retainer has a slight split in it which is making it useless now so I need a replacement. I have gone back to my dentist but they said they can only do a new mould to supply a new retainer. The problem is my teeth have moved a little so ideally I want the exact same retainer!

Is it possible for you to produce a new retainer getting a mould from my old one
If I send it to you?

    Many thanks in advance
